Abstract

The present research intends to investigate the place that the question of alterity has in Edmund Husserl's late philosophy, especially in Cartesian Meditations (1929). The central hypothesis of the work is that the theme of the intersubjective relationship between the self and the other has the objective of giving a full meaning to phenomenology, leading it, therefore, beyond the strict limits of an explanation of the transcendental ego as exclusive source of meaning constitution. Thus, the present research proposes, during an internship at the Centre of Philosophy of the University of Lisbon (CFUL), to deepen the investigation about the intersubjective relationships described by Husserl, focusing especially on the issue of communication and its relevance to the development of a theory of transcendental intersubjectivity. The questions that will base our investigation are: 1) How is the communicative experience different from the experience of the other [Fremderfahrung] described in the Fifth Meditation?; 2) To what extent is the communication approach essential for the development of a theory of transcendental intersubjectivity that intends to describe a common world? Due to recent publications by Pedro M. S. Alves on the subject and due to CFUL's long tradition of research in phenomenology, we consider the Department of Philosophy at the University of Lisbon to be the ideal place to continue the research. As a further result, we intend to strengthen academic ties between the Centre of Philosophy of the University of Lisbon (CFUL) and the Department of Philosophy of the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences (DF-FFLCH), especially with the Phenomenology Studies Group (GEFen), which is registered with the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development of the Ministry of Technology of Brazil.
