Abstract

The ecotoxicological assay establishment with native organisms is increasingly being stimulated in the evaluation of chemical compounds in all countries. In Brazil, some endemic species are used and well standardized, but few tests are in the process of having a test guidelines by the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards. For the regulation of new assays, more information are required regarding the biology of promising organisms as bioindicators and their interactions with different chemical substances. Compounds widely used in diverse anthropogenic activities and with great environmental impact, such as metals, are frequently analyzed. In laboratory tests, reference substances are used for the standardization and reliability of the tests, and cadmium chloride (CdCl2) will be used in this project. In this way, chronic ecotoxicity assays will be carried out with the limnic gastropod Biomphalaria glabrata. Survival and reproductive success of adult snails exposed to metal sublethal concentrations will be evaluated. The gastropod is a native organism, with ecological representativeness and has been shown to be a good experimental model for laboratory tests with various chemical substances. The development and regulation of tests with environmental significance is necessary for the adoption of more accurate control measures and risk assessment for the chemicals released and use that may impact the environment.(AU)
