Abstract The alternative studies for Portland cement have been conquering more importance in scientific field. Currently, the construction industry is responsible for significant negative environmental impacts. The increasing demand for raw material in construction industry leads to a reflection about the natural resources depletion (renewable and non-renewable). Additionally, the emission of a significant amount of carbon dioxide (CO_2) is highly harmful to the environment since it is one of the main greenhouse gases (GEE). In this sense, the implementation and use of alternative materials, such as silica fume (SA) and magnesium oxide (MgO), becomes of utmost importance in the current industry. The MgO is able to react with SA and provide the necessary resistance to concrete. The reaction of MgO and SA in the presence of water results in the formation of a gel known as magnesium-silicate-hydrate (M-S-H), which is the main responsible for providing the resistance of this mixture. Therefore, this project aims to study and evaluate the magnesium oxide and silica fume characteristics as an alternative of Portland cement substitution. | |
