Abstract

FAPESP's Young Researcher project "Teaching the Christian faith in the Iberian Peninsula" (Process 2017/11111-9) has as one of its collective products the assembly of the database, in the form of a catalogue, "Pastoral and doctrinal works of the Iberian world". The postdoctoral internship to be developed at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid will seek not only to acquire documents to complete the series of sources glossed by the database, but also to write an article to analyze the edifying role of the exempla collections in 15th century Portuguese society. With an emphasis on these works filled with moralizing anecdotes, the proposed article will seek to gather and examine the words used at different times in these works to name the actions and qualities that should move the confessor/penitent relationship, such as "obedience", "humility" and others. By proposing this study, the internship will also help to develop the research carried out in the recent agreement established between the aforementioned Young Researcher project and the Université de Fribourg through the FAPESP-SNSF grant (Process 2021/02936-0) with the aim of scrutinizing the contribution of the exempla, of brief moralizing narratives, for Christian formation. In general terms, the research will have as its starting point three objectives: first, it is the serialization of works in Portuguese and Spanish of pastoral nature from the 14th and 15th centuries for the expansion of an online database; second, it consists in making an essay about the moralizing proposal of the exempla, one of the genres works by this digital support; third is the collection of materials for finishing a book on the sins of the language. These are three products linked by the same objective of examining the mechanism of making believe in Iberian society at the end of the Middle Ages. (AU)
