Abstract

Coleocephalocereus Backeb. (Cactaceae) is composed of 8 species, being a relatively small genus in the family, exclusive distribution to Brazil. The genus has a history of nomenclatural and typification problems, with about 37 names, including validly published names, names, illegitimate names, and non-validly published names. Studies with phylogenetic data for a tribe are scarce, and only two species of Coleocephalocereus have been sampled, so far, in phylogenies. There are no gender-oriented phylogenetic studies on interspecific relationships, hypotheses regarding the distribution of lineages or synapomorphies. Thus, the present proposal proposes a taxonomic review of Coleocephalocereus, with nomenclature updates, species descriptions, provision of information on ecology, as well as taxonomic comments, anatomical data and, when necessary, description of new taxa and lectotypifications.(AU)
