Relation between the clinical features of migraine and central sensitization

Abstract

Central sensitization (CS) is prevalent in individuals with migraine. Changes in the Central Nervous System are caused by nociceptive hyperactivation that occurs repeatedly in migraineurs, facilitating descending pain modulation, increasing excitability, and reducing pain threshold, characterizing allodynia, hyperalgesia, receptive field expansion, and facilitation of descending pain pathways. Even though the presence of CS in migraineurs has been established, the relationship of the sensitization, assessed subjectively and objectively, with the clinical features of migraine, such as frequency, intensity, and duration, in years of headache is still discussed. Therefore, the aim of this study will be to evaluate the correlation between frequency, intensity, and duration of migraine with CS, measured by the Central Sensitization Inventory (CSI), Allodynia Symptom Checklist (ASC-12), and the Pressure Pain Threshold (PPT). Forty-six individuals with migraine will be assessed, using the CSI, ASC-12, and PPT of the cervical and facial muscles. For the statistical analysis of the data, mean, median and standard deviation will be presented and for the association between the variables will be used a Pearson or Spearman correlation. The results of this study may provide important evidence about the effects or manifestations of CS in individuals with migraine.(AU)
