Abstract

Brachycephalic syndrome is characterized by a partial obstruction of the upper respiratory tract in brachycephalic animals. Such obstruction comes from conformational abnormalities in the soft palate, nostrils, and trachea, which are characterized as primary alterations. As a consequence, these alterations can lead to a series of clinical signs and morphofunctional alterations in the most varied organ systems, thus characterizing secondary alterations. The gastrointestinal tract of brachycephalic dogs is increasingly being described as affected by these changes. In addition to the classic signs such as breathing difficulties, snoring, and exercise intolerance, there are secondary signs, often erroneously not correlated to the syndrome, such as choking, regurgitation, vomiting, drooling, dysphagia, and aerophagia, which directly influence the quality of life of brachycephalic animals. Thus, it is of great importance to evaluate the information profile of gastroenteric alterations in patients with the syndrome, its implications, diagnosis, possible forms of treatment, and its correlation with the degree of the respiratory syndrome. In this way, it is necessary to analyze the profile and knowledge of tutors and veterinarians in relation to the subject.(AU)
