Abstract

The main objective of this master project is to perform single and two droplet experiments aiming to provide valuable experimental data for latter validation of numerical simulations. These experiments will be performed in isothermal conditions, with and without impact, with and without droplet interaction, measuring the droplet shape, diameter and velocity with Shadowgraph (SDG) and the solid-liquid contact area with Total Internal Reflection (TIR). After verifying the liquid contact angle with the sapphire substrate, the student will perform experiments with two droplet impact, and one droplet impacting another droplet deposited over the substrate (droplet-on-droplet impact) with different horizontal distances between the droplets centers and different impact velocities. This master project not only will provide a robust database that is important for the development and validation of numerical fluid dynamics models, but also will collaborate to the development of the combined optical techniques planned in the main project for the evaluation of the thermal-hydraulics during droplet impact onto heated surface and spray cooling.
