Effect of the addition of calcium silicate and calcium orthophosphate particles on the mechanical properties, optical properties and calcium release of experimental restorative composites

Abstract

The incorporation of calcium silicate and calcium orthophosphate particles in resin materials has shown to be a promising strategy to promote dentin remineralization. The aim of the present study is to verify the effect of the addition of these particles on the degree of conversion, mechanical properties, optical properties and calcium release of experimental resin materials. In an organic matrix containing BisGMA and TEGDMA, barium glass particles (0.4 µm, control), dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (12 µm, DCPD, CaHPO4.H2O), hydroxyapatite (36 µm, HAP, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2), tricalcium phosphate (11 µm, ²-TCP, Ca3(PO4)2) or calcium silicate (5 µm) will be incorporated, all in a volumetric fraction of 40%. The degree of conversion will be determined by FTIR spectroscopy (n=5). Biaxial flexural strength and flexural modulus will be determined after 24 h storage (n=10) in soaking water. The transmittance and the translucency parameter of the materials will be determined in a spectrophotometer (n=5). Finally, the calcium release will be determined after storage for 7, 14, 21 and 28 days (n=5). Data will be analyzed using ANOVA/Tukey's test, with a significance level of 5%.
