Abstract

The present project seeks to articulate Theodor W. Adorno's discussion on the use of folkloric musical materials present in his writings from the 1920s with his concept of musical material, in order to understand how it can operate as a criterion to distinguish Béla Bartók from other folklorist composers of his time, analyzing to what extent his compositional project approaches New Music as an aesthetic project. The hypothesis of this research is that in the german philosopher's concept of musical material is inscribed a formula for apprehension of the past capable of serving as a basis for a renewed analytical conception, in which Bartók's use of folk materials appears as a critical compositional thought directly linked to the situation of music in modernism, not an arbitrary attempt to recover a folkloric past.
