Abstract

The growth of the urban sprawl in the municipalities located in the Amazon biome in the state of Maranhão is presented in a heterogeneous way, demonstrating economic hierarchies between cities, making it possible to understand the way in which the urban growth process occurs and what are its economic, social and environmental implications. This project consists of producing thematic maps of the growth of the urban sprawl in the municipalities of Maranhense Amazon between the years 2000 to 2020 to understand its distribution in geographic space and analyze its form and content. For this, the methodology will be based on survey and review of the literature, using as a theoretical approach fundamentals of critical urban geography, digital image processing, construction of georeferenced databases and production of thematic maps, including field trips. Thus, it is expected to contribute to the geographic knowledge related to urban development in the Maranhense Amazon.
