Abstract

Considering the growing relevance of the study of rituals in contemporary social theory, this project aims to reassess the legacy of the Durkheimian sociology of religion in order to provide a big picture of how the debate on Durkheim has evolved from Talcott Parsons to the present-day social theorists. In this regard, a set of works that symbolize the main trends in the Durkheimian scholarship will be analyzed, offering a new perspective on aspects in those works that are often overlooked. An alternative view of the Durkheimian sociology of religion's legacy shall be provided, shedding light on its potential and limits for contemporary social theory. (AU)
