Abstract

The Brazilian citrus industry, which holds the world leadership, has stood out for promoting socioeconomic growth, contributing to the national trade balance and, mainly, as a direct and indirect generator of jobs in the rural area. Brazil is also the largest exporter of coffee on the world market and occupies the second position, among the countries consuming the drink. Some mites of the genus Brevipalpus (Acari: Tenuipalpidae) are of economic importance because they are vectors of viruses in several cultures, with emphasis on CiLV-C (Citrus leprosis virus C) and CoRSV (Coffee ringspot virus). For both diseases, control consists mainly of eliminating the vector with the use of acaricides. One of the most significant aspects of plant growth and reproduction is the defense against herbivorous arthropods. In response to herbivory, plants emit specific mixtures of volatiles, called HIPVs (herbivore-induced plant volatiles). The objective of this research is to evaluate the biochemical and molecular mechanisms associated with the influence of predatory mites of Phytoseiidae family in the interaction between vector mites (Brevipalpus sp.), their associated viruses (CiLV-C and CoRSV) and host plants, in citrus and coffee agroecosystems. The results of this study can provide relevant information for the definition of management strategies for the vector mites and viruses mentioned, aiming at reducing the problems caused by the diseases.
