Abstract

The research presented here aims to question and analyze the way in which South Korean cinema constructs the representation of the Gwangju Uprising, which took place from May 18 to 27,1980, with some of its main points are the questions about the exclusion of female participation due toa certain masculinization of such a historical moment and the invisibility of certain aspects present in the movement, such as, for example, the participation of United States of America. In this research, we will focus on the productions A Taxi Driver (2017), by Hoon Jang, Peppermint Candy (1999), directed by Chang-dong Lee and A Petal (1996) by Sun-woo Jang. We will undertake a sociological approach aimed at questioning the representation of this important historical momentfor South Korean democracy through a gender perspective, as well as analyze the participation of the student movement during this period. The methodology used will be the Sociology of Art, especially the Sociology of Cinema, from which we will seek to understand how the Gwangju Uprising is constructed in cinema.
