Abstract

In the pastoral production in Portuguese in the 15th century, lessons on different themes stand out, such as the commandments, mortal sins, five senses, among other topics. With emphasis on the Cistercian treatise Horto do Esposo, compiled in the monastery of Alcobaça, this research will analyze the lessons about the five senses articulated from exempla (short narratives) and clear and direct sentences. More precisely, starting from one of the richest examples of Portuguese works from the 15th century, this study will examine the role attributed to experiencing the world for the practice of Christian devotion.
