Abstract

The project aims to investigate and characterize the breakup of the Bahian singer andguitarist João Gilberto with the bossa nova movement, in order to elucidate how tradition andmodernity are articulated in his work. To this end, it will be necessary an investigation of thedebate around the national question in popular music promoted by the Brazilian composers ofthe 20th century who most influenced João, in order to determine the origins of hisideological position. Furthermore, an analysis of the social themes implicit in the musicalproject of the bossanovistas will be carried out, in order to determine whether they are in linewith João Gilberto's perspective. Finally, it will be done an investigation of João's aestheticproposal and its social meanings, based on the analysis of his musical repertoire and hisperformance, and in line with the idea presented by Walter Garcia that the work of JoãoGilberto presents, in several dimensions, a contradiction without conflicts.
