Abstract

Some studies have already indicated an association between Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and the presence of musculoskeletal alterations, more specifically in the shoulder complex. Although the high prevalence of frozen shoulder in people with DM is well described in the literature, studies that analyzed shoulder changes in a broader and more functional way in this population are still rare. The aim of this study will be to compare shoulder pain and function between individuals with and without DM. Twenty-six individuals aged between 18 and 65 years will participate in the study, and they will be divided into two groups: Group 1 - 13 individuals with DM and Group 2 - 13 control individuals without the diagnosis of DM. Shoulder pain and function; the active and passive range of motion for flexion, medial and lateral rotation of the shoulder; muscle function of the shoulder flexors, medial and lateral rotators, and serratus anterior; and the functional performance of the upper limb will be evaluated in the participants. The Shapiro-Wilk test will be applied to assess data normality. Student's "t" parametric test will be applied to normal data to compare the means of the dependent variables between the two groups. If data present a non-normal distribution, the non-parametric Mann-Whitney test will be used to compare the average of the dependent variables. For all analyses, the significance level will be set at 5%.
