Abstract

This BEPE-PD proposal is part of my Post-Doctoral research project, that aims to reconstruct the trajectory of nine German immigrant female artists whose works are part of the collection of my currently host institution, the Museum of Contemporary Art at the University of São Paulo: Alice Brill, Barbara Schubert Spanoudis, Charlotta Adlerova, Eleonore Koch, Elisabeth Nobiling, Gisela Eichbaum, Hilde Weber, Hildegard Rosenthal and Lisa Ficker Hofmann. The selected timeframe spans from the 1930s through the 1950s, a period when the Brazilian art scene underwent significant change and modernization. My research aims to verify the hypothesis that these female artists were also among the numerous forces driving such changes. During the internship abroad proposed here, the research will delve into the social, historical, and artistic context in which these artists lived before leaving Europe, providing a comparison with the milieu found in Brazil. In this way, it will be possible to assess the cultural differences as well as the contributions made by these artists. Also, some of the artists researched in this project were already working as professionals in Germany before emigrating to Brazil. Therefore, the research to be conducted abroad will seek for documentation and bibliographic data to develop a fuller picture of their education and activities throughout the early stages of their careers, as well as the circumstances of their emigration.
