Abstract

Very few Neoproterozoic paleomagnetic poles (900-600 Ma) are presently available for the Cratons that constituted the supercontinent Gondwana. So, the main purpose of this work is to obtain a key paleomagnetic pole for the mafic dykes of Itapé (676 Ma), which are inserted in the Itabuna-Salvador-Curaçá Orogen domain, São Francisco Craton. In the field, 148 oriented cylinders were collected from 20 sites near the Itapé city. Three sites were well-exposed which allowed to carry out backed contact tests. The 676 Ma Itapé paleomagnetic pole will be compared with other poles of the same period, from other cratonic units trying to decifer the the Gondwana amalgamation. Complementary studies of the magnetic mineralogy and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility will help to determine the magnetic carriers present in the rock and to define its magnetic fabric, respectively. These studies are necessary to satisfy the quality criteria for key magnetic poles.
