Abstract

The present proposal aims to identify proteins associated with mercury and selenium in liver tissue samples from Serrasalmus rhombeus (predatory species) and Piaractus brachypomus (non-predatory species) from Madeira river/Rondonia using bioanalytical tools. In this context, it is intended to investigate possible biomarkers correlated with mercury and selenium concentrations and the consequences of oxidative stress by means of determining activities of enzymes of the first line of antioxidant defense (SOD, CAT and GPx) and of lipoperoxide concentration (LPO). A concomitant study of the mitigating effect of selenium on the deleterious action of mercury in the body of fish will also be carried out. It is expected that the results obtained will allow obtaining parameters that indicate the deleterious effects associated with mercury intoxication, as well as contributing with information to elucidate the mitigating effect of selenium in relation to mercury toxicity in relation to the Serrasalmus rhombeus and Piaractus brachypomus species.
