Abstract

The scientific initiation project in question will aim to evaluate migraine as a risk predictor of cognitive impairment and cerebral hippocampal alterations. Individuals with migraine (with and without aura) will be compared regarding cognitive changes throughout the ELSA-Brasil follow-up (Waves 1 (2008-10), Wave 2 (2013-14), Wave 3 (2018-19) and Wave 4 (2022- ongoing)) according to their migraine status: persistent migraine (Migraine in Waves 1 and 2), incident cases (no migraine in Wave 1: 2013-14, migraine in Headache Wave 2: 2019-2022), remitted cases (migraine in Wave 1, no migraine in headache Wave 2) compared to participants without headache in Waves 1 (2013-14) and 2 (2020-2022). In addition, the aim of the study will be to evaluate the hippocampal pattern obtained by brain imaging from 3T (n=1,393) and 7T (n=342 SuperAgers and their controls) magnetic resonance imaging. The scientific initiation student will work with the anonymized database of the sample of 1,393 ELSA-brain participants, including the 342 "SuperAgers" participants (n=171) defined as participants e 70 years old with delayed memory compared to individuals aged 46 to 54 years old who will be compared with their respective controls (n=171) matched by sex, age and educational level. The selection of the rest of the total sample (n=1.051) was carried out randomly and proportionally to the distribution of sex, age group and educational level within each stratum of the defined global cognitive score, considering frailty data, which had complete data from the Wave 3 (2018-19). This cognitive score was built based on cognitive batteries (cognitive function was assessed by CERAD validated for the Brazilian population for verbal learning, delayed recall, word recognition, semantic and phonemic verbal fluency tests). These data will be associated with brain imaging data by MR 3T and MR 7T that will be captured in this project.
