Abstract

This project will evaluate the effects of acidic and basic catalysts on the carbon dioxide methanation reaction, especially with Al2O3 and MgO supports. The catalysts will be synthesized using the sol-gel method. The properties of the catalysts will be characterized and evaluated using techniques such as X-ray diffraction; nitrogen physisorption; scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and CO2 and NH3 chemisorption. Spectroscopic studies in situ and in operation may elucidate the formation of carbonaceous compounds and possible sintering processes. The catalysts will be used in the CO2 methanation reaction because of the increase in methane selectivity that will be observed throughout the reaction. The catalytic activity will be monitored through in situ Raman spectroscopy under controlled and operating temperature and pressure conditions, aiming to understand the mechanisms and how they work during the CO2 methanation reaction. With the collected data, it will be observed and the best performance in search of the increase of methane selectivity.
