Abstract

This research analyzes comparatively, based on the anthropological literature, the conceptions of nation and peasantry developed by two political leaders and intellectuals of the Global South in the 20th century: the Chinese Mao Zedong (1893-1976) and the Peruvian José Carlos Mariátegui (1894-1930). The project seeks to understand and compare the national imaginations and visions of the peasantry articulated by these intellectuals, relating them to their interpretations of marxism and historical contexts. In dialogue with the anthropologies of nationalism, intellectuals and socialism, this research will consist of a critical reading and interpretation of contemporary writings of the two authors, identifying similarities and differences between them, as well as reading complementary bibliography on the histories of China and the Peru and critical works on the writings and biographies of these two revolutionary intellectuals. As the project requires materials that are inaccessible in Brazil and intensive dialogue with Peruvian and Chinese experts, much of the research will be carried out in internships in Peru and China.
