Abstract

This project, Methodological improvement (Trans-Formal Methods) and data collection with participating members of European cartonera publishers about their respective actions and productions, is part of my doctoral dissertation research (Cartonera Production, literary criticism, and democracy: theories), which intends to understand how cartonera circulation takes place and what the actions and creations are. This work contributes to documenting this production and to the analysis of the relationship between cartonera publishers and society. These publishers first emerged in the early 21st-century and began to produce handmade books using cardboard collected from the streets, typically in a collective and self-managed way, spreading a "cartonero" know-how widely and quickly. In an attempt to understand this expansive movement and the relationship between the actions and productions of cartonera publishers and notions of democracy and community, my research follows cartonera collectives and analyzes primary documents (manifestos and literary creations), in addition to using questionnaires and conducting interviews with participating members of some publishers. To do so, I use the Trans-formal Methods methodology, developed by the Cartonera Publishing research group. With this in mind, the research internship abroad is an opportunity to improve the methodological and analytical elements of this research; to use questionnaires and conduct interviews with European cartonera collectives in order to understand the new modes of network organization; to discuss the data with two expert advisors; to participate in classes and conferences; and to contribute to a process of international university partnerships and exchange.
