Abstract

As part of our ongoing doctoral research, this project aims to investigate overseas interpretations of the concept of reification that take as a basis its reformulation initiated by Jürgen Habermas in 1981. To this end, we consider that the theoretical framework for this reformulation is to be found in our basic text of study for this doctorate, the Theory of Communicative Action. To that aim, we will divide the presentation of this project into two moments: (I) we will start with Habermas's reformulation of the idea of reification, explaining the need to overcome the idea of 'form of objectivity' via his new notion of "form of understanding". In the second moment of this project, (II) we will deal with the position of Axel Honneth, due to his importance in the debate about reification already in the 2000s, which puts a new emphasis on the discussion of the concept in the context of the generations that succeed Habermas in critical theory. These theorists seek to carry forward, each in their way, the enterprise of updating the concept of reification; but in doing so, they need to respond in someway to the paradigm shift proposed by Habermas. In addition, with this research, we will conduct research with the Habermas Archive. In addition, with this research, we will investigate in the Habermas Archive. With this, we aim to understand, through the analysis of letters and other documents of the author, to go beyond the texts published so far, and to trace broader bases of the context of the publication of the Theory of Communicative Action.
