Abstract

Jeunesse dorée is a French term with which, in 1955, Guerreiro Ramos was able to designate certain men of letters in Rio de Janeiro, whose books had come to light shortly after the Brazilian Revolution of 1930, as reflections to its outcomes. Despite their long disappearance of the contemporary discussions, those men, in their literary genre, guided the intellectual debate in the country's public life at that time. Although he had indicated only three representatives of such a group, Ramos reminded that, throughout the Vargas Era, many other Brazilian writers were presenting the so-called elementary themes of the jeunesse dorée intellectual work: interpretation of the country's problems in terms of national psychology; reduction of the political problem to a simple moral problem; salvation of the country by intellectuals and elites; among others. Circumscribed to the current international academic tendency of occupation with of intellectuals and artists in their youth, in order to better conceive or review historical moments or characters, the project intends to investigate, based on the scrutiny of his development, as well as his journalistic production throughout the 1920s and the 1930s (a significant, practically unexplored or even inedited material), if the young Sérgio Buarque de Holanda would have shared ideologically the "dorée" worldview, so to speak, and, intellectually, the premises of the maurrasisme and of a certain current of the reactionary renewal of the objective German idealism. In other words, it aims to investigate the configuration that a Brazilian intellectual of the first half of the last century formed "in his interdependence with other social figures of the time", in the words of a well-known German sociologist.
