Abstract

Constipation is the most common defecation disorder in pediatric patients, and several organic diseases can cause it. Among the organic causes, there are anorectal anomalies and Hirschsprung's disease. Few therapeutic interventions are available for the treatment of constipation refractory to conventional therapies. Recent studies have included the use of neurostimulation in the treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders, such as sacral electrostimulation and transcutaneous electrostimulation of the posterior tibial nerve, which has shown promise, due to the lower cost, to be less invasive, with fewer complications and easier to perform.
