Abstract

In Central America, infection by L. (L.) infantum chagasi causes, in addition to visceral leishmaniasis (VL), non-ulcerated or atypical cutaneous leishmaniasis (LCNU), in the same geographical area. It should be noted that these two clinical forms are independent; therefore, they do not occur simultaneously in the same patient. However, although LCNU is not a fatal clinical form, the patient receives treatment with pentavalent antimonials (Glucantime) in accordance with the recommendations for L. (L.) infantum chagasi infection by the Pan American Health Organization, without taking taking into account toxicity and parenteral administration routes, in addition to the duration of treatment. Thus, the aim of this research project is to evaluate the leishmanicidal potential of drugs used in clinical medicine as amphotericin B, butenafine hydrochloride, neomycin and indomethacin and to evaluate them experimentally, administering them freely, in association or produced as nanoformulations for topical use aiming to characterize alternative and effective treatments directed to LCNU chemotherapy. The development of new therapeutic options will certainly contribute to public policies for the control of non-ulcer cutaneous leishmaniasis.
