Abstract

Some individuals who actively participate in political campaigns do not get to be elected. Other participants decide not to run. Even though, many of them become important actors in intermediate the relationship between voters and elected politicians. As well as they bring the demands of communities to cabinets, they try to influence voters in the context of a high number of candidates, during the electoral period. These intermediaries, known as brokers, work in the intermediation between voters and politicians who hold office. Zarazaga (2014), studying the Argentine case, draws attention to the fact that the work of brokers, despite their playing a crucial role in elections, still needs to be more researched, including their profile and repertoire of work. Although there are interesting ethnographic works, such as Hoyler (2022) and Koster (2012), there is also a need for more qualitative research on such intermediaries in Brazil. The objective of this project is to identify and map different types of brokers, mostly in the City of São Paulo, based on in-depth interviews with these actors. It aims to generate information about these less-known political agents, contributing to the general project and creating possibilities to improve this field of research.Researching what happens "on the ground" of political interactions allows us to be better covered two gaps in the literature: the first of them is about who these intermediary actors are (how they act, what their formal or informal relationship with parties); and the second concerns the different repertoire they use to deal with voters (Zarazaga, 2014).In this process, the gender focus will also be contemplated, seeking to identify how women integrate these dynamics of political negotiation.
