Abstract

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a progressive and incurable neuropathology, being the most common form of dementia, it is reported in literature as a serious public health problem worldwide. AD is responsible for destroying memory and other important mental functions, which the connections of brain cells and the cells themselves degenerate and die. Although there is still no consensual treatment, there are drugs and control strategies that can temporarily alleviate symptoms, with the treatment objective of delaying the evolution, and preserve intellectual functions for as long as possible. Piperine is an alkaloid that can be extracted from black pepper, and it has potential antiparasitic, antifungal and antitumor activities. A bibliographic search revealed the biological activity of piperine for AD. Thus, this project seeks to extract piperine and synthesize derivatives from this alkaloid to be tested as molecular target prototypes to mitigate the effects of AD. This proposal also presents as a perspective the study of encapsulation of the compounds by biomaterials from agricultural residues. This process will be in collaboration with research groups partners by Campus Araras/UFSCar.
