EVALUATION OF THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN HYPERVENTILATION SYNDROME AND ANXIETY SYMPTOMS IN STREET RUNNERS AND THEIR ASSOCIATION WITH PERFORMANCE

Abstract

Introduction: Running is a sport that brings many benefits to physical and mental health. However, the pursuit of performance can trigger symptoms of anxiety, a psychosomatic disorder that can cause symptoms such as dyspnea, also common in hyperventilation syndrome (HVS). However, the prevalence of symptoms of anxiety and HVS and the association between them in runners is still unknown. Objectives: The present study aims to evaluate the association between HVS symptoms and anxiety in this population and to evaluate the association of these symptoms with running performance. Methods: 130 high-performance athletes (25% percentile of average speed of Brazilian runners) will be evaluated in long-distance running events (from 10 kilometers to marathon). Athletes will be screened when delivering kits for the best-known competitions held in the state of São Paulo. Assessment of symptoms of HVS (Nijmegen) and anxiety (HADS) will be performed. From these assessments, runners will be divided into two groups and classified as having or not having symptoms of anxiety and HVS (A+ and A-, respectively). The performance of the athletes will be obtained from the official times of each race. The sample calculation was based on a 10% prevalence of HVS. Data normality will be assessed using the Shapiro-Wilk test and comparison between groups will be performed using the ANOVA-One Way test or the Kruskal-Wallis test.
