Abstract

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by the presence of steatosis in more than 5% of hepatocytes, being a chronic pathology with a broad spectrum that can progress to cirrhosis. NAFLD is considered one of the main etiologies of liver disease and has become an epidemic pathology. Weight loss is considered a means of treatment for this disease, so bariatric surgery is efficient in the remission of NAFLD. Among the various surgical techniques, the one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) has been increasingly used as an alternative to the already consolidated Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. Previous studies have already sought to highlight the impact of one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) on pathological liver changes in severely obese individuals with NAFLD, using standardized disease scores, however, with some limitations, such as the absence of a control cohort.1 Thus, this retrospective study aims to elucidate the effects of OAGB on NAFLD through the evaluation of non-invasive scores and intraoperative liver biopsy, comparing the results obtained from patients submitted to Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. Thus, the aim is, in an unprecedented way in our country, to evaluate the effects of the third most performed technique in the world, in the important cause of liver cirrhosis in the coming decades.
