Abstract

The present work aims to analyze the film Os Inconfidentes (1972), by Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, from the perspective of the writing of history. The objective is to explore how Joaquim Pedro's cinematographic project challenges or subverts the writing and memory of a historical event consecrated by Brazilian official history, producing new forms of meaning and memory about the past in the light of the historical context of the 1970s. Based on film analysis and the discussion of theoretical categories and key concepts, highlighting the specificities of avant-garde modern cinema, or author cinema, the research aims to investigate how the film articulates temporalities, subjects, discourses, and images to compose a critical reflection, not only on the past it focuses on - the seditious conspiracy of 1789 - but above all, on the present, when the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964-1985) was in effect.
