Abstract

In the last decade, there has been an increasing interest for the development of amorphous Metal-Organic Framework (a-MOF) materials. These materials combine the interesting properties of MOFs (outstanding thermal and chemical stabilities, high surface areas, excellent porosities, and tunable pore sizes, shapes and chemical functions) with properties of the amorphous phase (isotropy, absence of grain boundaries, abundant defects and active sites and flexibility). Fundamental knowledge about the nature of the crystalline-to-amorphous transitions in these materials is essential for further development of this research field. To this end, solid state NMR is a valuable tool. Most NMR works in literature focus on the structure of the organic linkers (mostly 13C/1H NMR). In the present project, we propose to study changes occurring on the coordination environment of the metallic center when crystalline Zeoltitic Imidazole Frameworks (ZIFs) are amorphized by different solid state reactions. For this, ZIF compositions containing favorable NMR (Cd, B, Li, Pt) or EPR active (Co, Cu) probes will be synthesized. Isomeric crystalline and amorphous compounds will then be characterized by solid state NMR and EPR spectroscopy.
