Abstract

This is an ethnography of the musical performance of three groups of rural samba from São Paulo with the objective of investigating the processes of non-verbal interaction that occur in the performances, in order to identify their articulations with the forms of sociability valued in this universe cultural. The objective was also to ethnography the musicking of rural samba from São Paulo groups, identifying its interactive aspects; identify recurring patterns in non-verbal interactions between participants during the performance; to ethnograph the contexts of sociability of rural samba from São Paulo groups during their extra-musical activities; identify recurrent patterns of interaction between participants in extra-musical contexts; identify the political discourses and cultural values of the participants of rural samba from São Paulo groups. The samba de bumbo or samba rural from São Paulo is a cultural manifestation probably born at the end of the 18th century in the context of slavery in Brazil. It is a participatory practice that has the bass drum as the main instrument, the groupings are religiously motivated and the practices, points and dances are based on tradition. The fundamental question of this research is how the interactive experiences in the performance extend to the forms of interaction and sociability in the extra-musical context of the group? For this, an ethnographic investigation (participant observation) will be carried out on the non-verbal behavior of the groups that perform the samba of Cururuquara -Grupo 13 de Maio, the Grito da Noite (Santana de Parnaíba) and the samba of Pirapora (Pirapora do Bom Jesus).
