The neighborhood and the street: Pinheiros in the first half of the 20th century

Abstract

The present work assumes the neighborhood and the street as scales of the city analysis; we take as research focus the neighborhood of Pinheiros through three of its streets: Capote Valente, Cônego Eugênio Leite and Paes Leme. Through the experiences present in these streets, we propose to investigate the transformations that have taken place in Pinheiros, mobilizing the neighborhood as a space of daily and everyday activities, of vicinity relations, which simultaneously inserted its residents in the scale of the metropolis. We used as research methodology the spatial crossing of several sources: historical maps, register from the municipal council, commercial tax and registration books, building approval requests, and newspapers. These sources allow us to access an urban daily life that was made from conflicts, advertisements, and reports about multiple themes and facts that shaped the city. They reveal to us, in their various scales of action in the territory, characteristics of Pinheiros neighborhood occupation, its daily use, and the people who lived and circulated there, revealing an extremely heterogeneous and plural occupation. From the overlapping and spatial crossing of these sources in the territory, we constitute everyday life networks that help us understand the changes and permanences in several latent themes in the first half of the 20th century - the research time period - and that were part of the long and complex São Paulo's metropolization process.
