Abstract

Photonics is closely related to non-linear optics (NLO), since the development of new devices or new applications of radiation requires the investigation of the interaction of light with matter at the limit of high intensities. Thus, efforts have been made to discover new materials that have the NLO properties of interest. In particular, a significant fraction of studies have focused on organic molecules that have delocalized 5 electrons, which contribute to a significant increase in nonlinearities. Chalcones, for example, are a family of organic molecules that have delocalized 5 electrons due to the presence of two aromatic rings. In addition, such molecules have relatively simple synthesis, allowing the molecular engineering of new compounds, still being of great biological interest. Therefore, there are several works in the literature that study the non-linear optical properties of these molecules, however, so far, no work has been found that studies the effect on the two-photon cross section due to the presence of substituents in the aromatic ring for bromochalcone derivatives. Thus, this work aims to study the dynamics of excited states and the effect of these substituents (either electron donors or acceptors) on the two-photon absorption cross section for this family of molecules.
