Abstract

Extreme brachycephalic breeds are more likely to develop brachycephalic airway obstructive syndrome. The chronic condition of airway obstruction results in mucosal edema, soft tissue thickening and degeneration of the laryngeal cartilages leading to laryngeal collapse. The arytenoid cartilage in these dogs has degenerative characteristics, influencing mechanical weakness and chondromalacia. The objective of this study was to analyze, through histopathological evaluation, 15 samples of arytenoid cartilage from the cuneiform process of dogs affected by grades two and three of brachycephalic syndrome and laryngeal collapse, obtained through the cuneiformectomy technique. The study will be able to correlate the histopathological characteristics with the degrees of the syndrome and laryngeal collapse in different breeds. It is expected that breeds with high degrees of the syndrome will be affected by high degrees of chondromalacia.
