Abstract

In this Undergraduate Research project, the objective is to conduct the analysis and biochemical characterization of constituents within the Renin-Angiotensin System (RAS). This analysis will be carried out through the assessment of the proteolytic profile of the enzymes involved in the formation and degradation of Ang II, Ang 1-7, and Ang 1-9 from Ang I. This will be done using samples of aortic homogenate obtained from patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and patients without an aneurysm. Specific RAS substrates and inhibitors will be employed, and the proteolytic profile of the different angiotensins will be analyzed through mass spectrometry. The experimental groups delineated for these experiments are as follows:I) Aortas from AAA patients.II) Aortas from patients without aneurysm (control group). The distinctiveness and relevance of this project lie in its innovative approach to the proteolytic profile analysis, which will investigate the processes of angiotensin formation and degradation in a translational manner, thereby contributing to the comprehension of the pathophysiology of abdominal aortic aneurysms.
