Abstract

This project aims to present a research proposal on the production and reception processes of the book As Ciências no Brasil (1955, 2 vols.) in its historiographical and historical context, paying attention to its organizer, Fernando de Azevedo (1894-1974), and the authorial role he played in the historiography of science in Brazil. The main sources of the research, in addition to the book itself (in its two editions, 1955 and 1994), are correspondence, manuscripts and plans related to the book, which are in the Fernando de Azevedo Archive (at IEB-USP), in addition to newspaper articles and works from the historiography of science in Brazil published in the first half of the 20th century and between the 1970s and 2000s that refer directly to the volumes of As Ciências no Brasil. As a theoretical-methodological contribution, we will mainly use the History of the book and reading in dialogue with the Theories of reception and effect. This research is part of the field of History of the historiography of sciences in Brazil and intends to contribute to this field by looking at the book As Ciências no Brasil (and its effects), seen by this same historiography as an important landmark in the structuring of this field of knowledge, History of science in Brazil, which became institutionalized during the 1980s. By dealing with different sources, some of them still unpublished, we aim to provide results that can help subsequent studies that may focus on Brazilian historiography, in general, and on the sciences in Brazil in particular.
