Abstract

Startups can be referred to as a cluster of organizations designed to develop new products or services in the face of uncertain situations. Several studies highlight the importance of break-even for startups. While there is a theoretical consensus on the significance of break-even for startup establishment, the practical perspective of entrepreneurs has shown that the pursuit of this point can constrain the traction and scalability process. In light of this, the objective of this research project is to assess the importance of break-even for the scalability process of Brazilian agricultural startups (agtechs) and, ultimately, generate a multifactorial model that identifies situations where the economic-financial perspective or the practical perspective is advocated. To achieve this, an exploratory field study will be conducted, followed by the construction of a model using the Design Science Research (DSR) technique. The data collected in the field study will be analyzed through Content Analysis and Hierarchical Descendant Classification (HDC) and Correspondence Factor Analysis (CFA).
