Abstract

Additive manufacturing techniques enable the production of components with complex geometry and unique characteristics. Laser powder bed fusion can be used to obtain metallic parts with suitable mechanical properties for structural applications. Titanium alloys are of great interest for both aerospace and biomedical applications, offering a wide range of mechanical properties through various thermomechanical treatments. Therefore, in this research project, the aim is to investigate the use of Laser Powder Bed Fusion for manufacturing heterogeneous specimens composed of alternating layers of Ti-5553 alloy (Ti-5Al-5V-5Mo-3Cr-0.5Fe in wt. %) and Ti-42Nb (in wt. %) forming a sandwich structure. The selection of an alloy that responds well to heat treatments of solution and aging (Ti-5553) along with another stable Ti-² alloy (Ti-42Nb) presents an interesting method to achieve a balance of strength and toughness. The samples produced through Laser Powder Bed Fusion will be characterized by Optical and Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray Diffraction, thermal analyses, Vickers microhardness, and nanoindentation.
