Abstract

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen strongly related to difficult-to-treat nosocomial infections with a high mortality rate. The bacterium's mutagenic phenomena confer the ability to acquire resistance to different groups of antimicrobial agents and this portrays a challenging scenario in the fight against infections caused by this agent. In this scenario, there is a need to search for new pharmacological alternatives and phytotherapy has received great visibility with the discovery of new drugs from plants and vegetables that have different therapeutic activities. The objective of the study is to explore the antimicrobial capacity of the synergism between the hydroalcoholic extracts of Cinnamomum verum (cinnamon) and Syzygium aromaticum (clove), on clinical multiresistant strains of P. aeruginosa. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and the Minimum Microbicidal Concentration (MMC) will be determined by the broth microdilution method (CLSI M7-A6). To evaluate the combination of extracts, the checkerboard technique will be used and the fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) will be adopted. The concentrations that are synergistic (FICI d0.5) will be analyzed on P. aeruginosa monomicrobial biofilms for the contact time of 5 min and 24 h. Results will be statistically analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test (p d 0.05).
