Abstract

The SPEC Innovations in Human and Non-Human Animal Communities project aims to reconstruct the evolutionary history of three allegedly human-specific cognitive abilities, namely: linguistic competence, symbolic activities, and sophisticated tools. One topic within this broad question refers to the antecedents, if any, that exist in non-human animal species. Whereas primates and birds have received significant attention into the linguistic literature, anurans have not. However, the pool of literature on frog acoustic and visual communication may be compatible with the notion of an Esystem, as in a current linguistic theory. (AU)
