Abstract

The State of Rio de Janeiro (ERJ) presents favorable conditions for the development of mariculture, despite having reduced aquaculture. Mariculture in Baía da Ilha Grande (BIG) shows progressively reduced productivity over the course of the last years, due to sudden death outbreaks in the scallop population. The causes for this break in productivity are still unknown but reduce drastically production in many marine farms that can reach their end. Henceforth an investigation is due around the environmental conditions in farming water, with also paying attention to possible scallop pathogens. The analysis on water microbiota is extremely relevant to studies that describe the quality of water and may supply relevant information for our understanding regarding scallop productivity reduction as well as promoting improved productivity. This study proposes: I. To analyze taxonomic and functional diversity in BIG's water farming microbiome; and II. To identify possible causes to the scallop deaths in BIG. (AU)
