Abstract The dynamic soil-structure interaction (DSSI) models that we have implemented so far are at a point where they can run a full-scale case study of the Sirius Project. Like most particle accelerators of its kind, Sirius is built on a layered concrete slab resting on a very large group of piles. Our models are currently capable of considering arbitrarily-shaped, three-dimensional structures resting on groups of piles, which in turn can be embedded in transversely isotropic, layered soils. Sirius' underlying soil profile has been extensively studied and is well known at this point. Hence, we have both the modeling capability and the necessary data to conduct this case study. However, we still must overcome a computational cost barrier for this to be possible. Because of the boundary element framework in which our pile group model is based, the estimated computing time required for this analysis is not feasible with our current implementations. This Scientific Initiation project is dedicated to investigate software and hardware strategies to obtain massive speed-ups in the computation of large-scale DSSI problems. | |
