Abstract

This research intends to carry out a study of aspects of modern public art that are still little explored by the historiography of architecture and art in the context of São Paulo and Brazil. The perspective chosen is the contribution of artistic and popular religious culture as an element in the renovation of the decoration of religious architectural spaces that are linked, in different ways, to community life. As an example of these innovative contributions, the works of some artists who worked in São Paulo will be considered, such as Antonio Paim Vieira (1895-1988), Cássio M'Boy (1903-1986) and the Moldovan Samson Flexor (1907-1971). These artists made original contributions to the decoration of important Catholic liturgical spaces in the state and city of São Paulo through mural painting, ceramics and sculpture. This research proposal aims to value these aspects through a survey and analysis of unpublished materials and sources of works that are sometimes unknown or ignored, considering their public significance, particularly in the churches of Nossa Senhora do Brasil and Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro, both in the city of São Paulo, and in the chapel of São Lázaro, in Embu das Artes.
