Abstract

The national territory underwent a process of productive restructuring of agriculture and livestock from the second half of the 20th century, changing the dynamics of reproduction in the countryside and in the city. In this context, the so-called agribusiness cities emerge, which can be considered as one of the results of the territorial diffusion of globalized agribusiness. Small and medium-sized cities have become important service centers for globalized agribusiness, offering their main services, products and diversified workforce. Such non-metropolitan urban spaces have become increasingly specialized, comprising the high regional competitiveness and consequent territorial vulnerability in the face of the global market for agricultural commodities. Based on these assumptions, this study intends to understand how global agribusiness acts on one of the most iconic municipalities of this productive branch in the Brazilian territory: Sorriso (MT). Based on several secondary databases and specialized literature, we propose: 1) to investigate whether such a municipality has the characteristics intrinsic to agribusiness cities, in particular socio-spatial inequalities and functional urbanization to competitive agriculture, according to the concept and criteria of recognition proposed by the geographer Denise Elias; 2) verify the potential of the municipality of Sorriso (MT) to attract agroindustries to its territory.
