Evaluation of physicochemicol properties of calcium silicate based-sealers with different plasticizing agents

Abstract

Calcium silicate-based sealers have a grainy consistency and require plasticizing agents, such as polymers, to ensure handling and flow throughout the entire dimension and ramifications of the root canals. Several polymers are questionable regarding their positive contribution to the physicochemical properties of bioceramic sealers and need to be better elucidated. Therefore, the aim of this study will be to evaluate the addition of the following polymers as plasticizing agents in the tricalcium silicate powder vehicle: polyethylene glycol 400, hydroxyethylcellulose, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and carboxymethylcellulose. Physical-chemical tests (n = 6) will be performed according to ISO 6876/2012: setting time, flow, radiopacity and solubility, in addition to the ions calcium release and pH in periods of 1, 7, 14 and 28. To evaluate the chemical characterization, will be carried out using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-rays and RAMAN spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). For the physical-chemical tests, the data will be quantitatively evaluated, using mean and standard deviation, and if there is normality, the ANOVA two-way test with post hoc Bonferroni will be performed with a significance level of 0.05.
