Abstract

The aim of this project is to propose a study of the intellectual debates about the Hellenion, a Greek sanctuary in Naukratis, which was erected in the middle of the 6th century BC. Given the historical relevance of this emporium, which has been studied and debated by different scholars for centuries, this research is interested in understanding in general how historical and archaeological knowledge about the site of Naukratis was built and organized, from the definition of its location by William Matthew Flinders Petrie in 1884 to the Naukratis Project, a research initiative conceived by the British Museum between 2004 and 2023. Based on this interest, the research will focus on the more specific debates that have been promoted about the Hellenion over the decades. To this end, a systematic bibliographical survey will be carried out of the main works that have Naukratis and the Hellenion as objects of study and, based on a guided reading, these works will be put into perspective in order to highlight the theoretical-methodological transformations that can be observed in the approaches to the emporium and its sanctuary.
